Project Overview
A Multisensory Public Display Game Experience
This project was part of an interaction design course during my masters studies at UCL. The brief originated from the ACM CHI 2020 student game competition. Our task was to demonstrate our game design and development skills by creating a prototype of game that utilises a novel interface and addresses an interaction design problem.
As human impact on the environment is intensifying my team decided to develop a game to raise awareness and promote behavioural change by providing users with knowledge about everyday behaviours that are beneficial for, or threatening to a specific endangered animal. Using a human-centred design process, we gathered user requirements and developed a multisensory educational group game in which players have to cooperate to control an animal and avoid harmful or collect helpful items using voice and movement.

The Result
An engaging and motivating game awarded ACM CHI Finalist
Through iteration sessions, reference to secondary research and a survey we decided to develop a voice-controlled group game that would utilise smartphones and a big screen set up in a museum, zoo, national park or such the like. My main role was to develop the smartphone and big screen UI screens that would connect users to the game and instruct them how to play.
Users who played the game during a final Wizard-of-Oz user test found the game highly engaging, successful in raising awareness, and reported increased motivation to take action in their personal lives. I produced a prototype trailer and project explanation video that were submitted to the ACM CHI 2020 student competition. The project was awarded a finalist place and the final paper was published and is available in the ACM digital library.
The project is excellently scoped - motivated by the need to educate people about the rate of species extinction.
